"Instead of concerning yourselves with becoming successful or important, I hope you will strive your hardest behind the scenes and continue to exert yourselves fully for kosen-rufu. If you polish your abilities, you'll naturally come to shine. Mr. Toda did not ask us to become professional clergy. Rather, he called on youth to become leaders who are dedicated to working for the benefit of society. By that, he meant that we should become leading figures in various fields and not restrict ourselves to the realm of religion. "The Daishonin writes: 'An enemy will try to make you forget the danger so that he can attack' (WND-1, 952), and 'The protection of the gods depends on the strength of one's faith' (WND-1, 953). Precisely when we are moving forwards vigorously, we must be careful not to grow negligent or complacent. Arrogance and recklessness put us off guard. The Daishonin urges: 'Be millions of times more careful than ever' (WND-1, 839). That is his solemn advice.
"Faith is a struggle between the Buddha and devilish functions. If we let down our guard or are the least bit careless, we risk being overrun and defeated by negative forces. "In his letter "The Strategy of the Lotus Sutra", the Daishonin lists three reasons why Kingo triumphed in his recent skirmish. The first is 'usual prudence.' In other words, staying alert, taking careful precautions, paying close attention to what's happening, and never slackening for a moment in any of those efforts. The second is 'courage.' Namely, the courage to deal calmly with any crisis, along with the wisdom that derives from such courage. And third is 'firm faith in the Lotus Sutra.' That is to say, the strong resolve to maintain steadfast faith in the Mystic Law, no matter what happens. This is the foundation for everything else. Because, ultimately, prudence and courage derive from faith.
"Of course, it is a mistake to think that everything will somehow work out okay just because we're practising the Daishonin's Buddhism. "The purpose of faith is to make our hearts strong and steadfast -- that is, to develop inner strength and conviction. Everything depends on our minds, our hearts. The ultimate conclusion of Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism is summed up in the words: 'It is the heart that is important' (WND-1, 1000).
"Buddhism is win or lose. It is a struggle between enlightenment and ignorance. Kosen-rufu is a battle between the Buddha and devilish functions. Our heart or mind is what decides our victory or defeat in all things. Spiritual victors can lead lives that are not defeated by anything. The secret to adorning our lives with brilliant victory is the 'strategy of the Lotus Sutra.'"

"Persevering in faith in the evil age of the Latter Day of the Law is like swimming upstream against a powerful current. It is hard enough just to resist the insidious forces exerted by our own earthly desires and fundamental darkness. Shakyamuni compared these forces to a strong current or flood. The Daishonin explains that this is even more true in the LatterDay, when even seemingly remarkable human wisdom, ingenuity, or know-how can be inundated by an inexorable tide of deluded impulses fuelled by the three poisons of greed, anger, and foolishness--an ever-growing tide that wreaks havoc as a force of evil (WND-1, 1121).
"Precisely because it is so difficult to carry out faith in the Mystic Law in such an age, the bonds of mentor and disciple in Buddhism take on a decisive importance. Likewise, a harmonious community of fellow practitioners solidly united in purpose -- in what the Daishonin terms as 'the spirit of many in body, one in mind' -- is also indispensable. The Soka Gakkai possesses the bonds of mentor and disciple that are strong enough to withstand any adversity. And its members -- noble ordinary people who are polishing their lives by striving in faith with the same commitment as their mentor -- are allied together in solid unity. Moreover, countless members, like magnificent dragons born through the triumphant ascent of the waterfall, are leading lives of profound dignity and confidence forged through continually challenging themselves in their faith and self-development."

"Why, then, should there be no cause for regret in laying down one's life for the Lotus Sutra? Regarding this, the Daishonin says: 'Think of this offering as a drop of dew rejoining the ocean, or a speck of dust returning to the earth' (WND-1, 1003). From the standpoint of eternity, our present existence is as fleeting as dew. And, compared to the colossal scale of the universe, our lives are as tiny as specks of dust. However, by solidly basing our lives on the Mystic Law --which is as vast as the ocean and as firm as the earth -- we can establish an unshakable and boundless state of life that is at one with that all - encompassing Law. "The Tang dynasty poet Bai Juyi wrote a well-known poem related to the Dragon Gate. It tells the story of a carp that attempted to climb the waterfall but fell back and, having cut its forehead on the rocks below, decided to abandon the endeavour. Bai Juyi asks what the carp must be feeling, and provides an answer to the effect. ' Apparently, if you become a dragon, you have the hard work of ascending into the heavens and making the rain fall. Rather than taking on such hardship, it's probably better to remain a carp and swim about freely.' Having observed the vicissitudes of the political realm, Bai Juyi no doubt held the sentiment that one might be happier where one is now, living just as one pleases, rather than shouldering onerous responsibilities that often come with success.
"Dragons have the job of making the rain fall -- this same work can be regarded as a burden or as a mission, depending on how one looks at it. This difference in outlook or attitude is also what determines whether we will be defeated by negative influences, or evil friends, or successfully attain Buddhahood. Truly, as the Daishonin says, 'It is the heart that is important' (WND-1, 1000). And this difference in heart or spirit comes down to whether or not we embrace the 'great vow' that is mentioned in this letter.
"To bring our practise of the Lotus Sutra, or the Mystic Law, to successful completion means that we must eagerly and joyfully embrace the mission of taking on the sufferings of still more and more people and of challenging even greater difficulties in our cause for human peace and happiness. The Daishonin urges us to actively seek this way of life, to valiantly climb the Dragon Gate of faith as successors of kosen-rufu, and attain Buddhahood without fail. As practitioners of the Mystic Law, this is what it means for us to 'live based on a great vow.'"

"'Virtuous soul, rejoice; sorrow is like dew, ... lamenting is futile; victory is found in struggle; we face the tremendous avalanche of adversity and misfortune, with resolve and courage!'
"Lamenting gets us nowhere. Don't have a bleak and barren heart. Make your way with a rich heart and strong spirit evocative of bright sunshine, the earth a bloom with flowers, and a bounteous crop of vegetables.
"As Nichiren Daishonin writes, 'Buddhism primarily concerns itself with victory or defeat' (WND-1, 835). This means we need to exert ourselves. Those who fail to do so will never succeed. Let's challenge ourselves!"

"From the Buddha's perspective, everyone has a right to happiness. Everyone has the potential to lead a life brimming with joy. We who uphold Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism, moreover, know how to tap the Mystic Law in our lives. That is why we not only have a right to happiness but also have an important mission to help others actualise true happiness in their lives as well.
"'Winter always turns to spring' means that ordinary people who triumph overall challenges they encounter in the course of their Buddhist practise will definitely become Buddhas. "'Those who believe in the Lotus Sutra are as if in winter,' the Daishonin says. Before we can welcome spring, we must go through winter. Attaining Buddhahood in this lifetime entails a fierce struggle to change our karma, as well as to overcome the various challenges posed to our practice by the three obstacles and four devils, and the three powerful enemies. The trials of winter are unavoidable if we wish to soar into a brilliant springtime based on faith.
"'Those who believe in the Lotus Sutra are as if in winter'-- these are the compassionate words of a strict father advising us to follow the sure path to attaining Buddhahood by battling and triumphing over all karmic impediments. The way we attain Buddhahood is summed up in the words, 'Winter always turns to spring.'
"Winter turns into spring; it does not become autumn. This is an unchanging principle of nature. In the same way, the Daishonin says, those who uphold the Mystic Law, the great teaching for gaining enlightenment, will never fail to become Buddhas or remain in the deluded state of an ordinary, unenlightened person. As the Buddha promises in the Lotus Sutra, those who hear and embrace the Mystic Law will all attain Buddhahood without a single exception (cf. LS2, 41). This is a universal principle of life."

We will be able to attain a life-state of boundless freedom that will allow us to embrace all hardships and sorrows like a great ocean. The time will definitely come when the significance of all our experiences will become clear.
"For that reason, it is vital that we keep forging ahead based on chanting daimoku in both times of suffering and times of joy. Then, in times of suffering, we will find the wisdom to change poison to medicine, and in times of joy, we will be able to proceed in even higher spirits. 'My wish is that all my disciples make a great vow' (WND-1, 1003) -- writes the Daishonin in a letter to his youthful disciple Nanjo Tokimitsu, hoping to galvanise him and his other followers during the Atsuhara Persecution.
"As long as disciples remain focused solely on their limited personal desires and wishes, they cannot be fully united with their mentor in the lofty goal of kosen-rufu. They will always be confined to their small, narrow self. A great vow means making the same vow for kosen-rufu as the mentor. It means sharing the same purpose and acting in the same spirit as the mentor, the votary of the Lotus Sutra. Buddhism teaches that both aspects are inherent within human life, with one or the other being manifested due to the arising of certain causes and conditions. --- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ---
March, the month of growth (Yayoi), has arrived. Brimming with a youthful and vibrant spirit, let's all initiate the action needed to develop new friendships with as many new people as we possibly can. The more people we help to make a connection with Buddhism and its philosophy, the more our own life condition will expand!

"The Italian author Edmondo De Amicis (1846-1908), in his immensely popular children's novel Cuore (Heart), asserts that even the most illustrious individual is but 'a vile creature' if he brings grief to his mother. This is absolutely true. We must all treasure our mothers. No matter how high someone might rise as a leader, politician, or celebrity, if they don't treasure their mother, protect her, and make her proud of them, they are the lowest of the low."

"A Korean proverb says, 'Close neighbours are like cousins.' It is incredibly important, both in our local communities and in international society, to get along well with our neighbours. This friendship is the first step towards the goal of world peace."

"I’d like to share with you some words of the great Chinese military strategist Zhuge Liang (181-234), who is portrayed in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
"'Though you may be treated with deference, never become conceited.' This is a lesson that top leaders, in particular, must reflect on every day.
"'Though you may be entrusted with authority, never become dictatorial.' In other words, you must always seek out the counsel and opinions of others, and not become autocratic and overbearing.
"'Never try to hide the help you receive from others.' And likewise, never forget to have appreciation for those who lend you their support and assistance.

When we're making use of someone's precious home, it's only natural that we show them the greatest courtesy. We must be sure to show our appreciation in tangible ways. Despite various personal circumstances and situations, these families are kindly allowing us to use their homes for meetings.... We need to behave with the utmost respect and courtesy so that members will be glad to welcome us into their homes. We should also offer to tidy up after the meeting, being more careful and particular than if it were at our own home."

"The Great Teacher Dengyo of Japan defined the true meaning of 'a treasureof the nation' at the start of his Regulations for Students of the Mountain School, a writing that he presented to the imperial court. The famous passage reads: 'What is the treasure of the nation? A mind that seeks the way is a treasure; those who possess this seeking mind are the treasure of the nation.'
"'Seeking mind' here means a seeking spirit towards the Buddha way, the Mahayana bodhisattva spirit of dedicating oneself to the welfare of all people. In other words, such things as the wealth, social position, or power a person possesses are not true treasures; the ultimate treasure is the spirit to take action for others out of a desire for their happiness."

"Naturally, 'in one's present form' doesn't mean attaining Buddhahood while wallowing in suffering or surrendering to indolence. A struggle to transform the moment-to-moment focus of our minds is required. Nichiren Daishonin revealed the Gohonzon, the object of devotion, so that anyone can undertakethis struggle.
"The Daishonin gave expression to the supreme state of life he had attained, by inscribing it in the form of the Gohonzon. Those who chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo with faith in this Gohonzon can break through the darkness or ignorance that shrouds their lives and bring forth from within the state of Buddhahood that is one with the Mystic Law."

"...the important thing is faith. The more we deepen our faith, the more ourl ives will be dyed with the hues of Buddhahood. To illustrate this, the Daishonin cites the words of the Great Teacher T'ien-t'ai of China: 'From the indigo, an even deeper blue.'
"The leaves of the indigo plant are a green colour with a faint bluish tint. But if something is soaked many times in the dye extracted from these leaves, it will become a deep, vibrant blue. Our practise for attaining Buddhahood in this lifetime is the same. The Lotus Sutra that expounds this principle can be likened to the leaves of the indigo plant, while practising the Daishonin's Buddhism can be likened to being repeatedly soaked in the dye produced from these leaves. In other words, in the Daishonin's Buddhism, when we deepen our faith through hearing the teachings and strive ever harder in our Buddhist practise, we can manifest our Buddhahood in our actual lives and attain enlightenment in this existence.
"The purpose of studying the Daishonin's writings is not only to understand the Daishonin's spirit and deepen our own faith, but, by learning about the profound principles of Buddhism, to gain the solid conviction that hope and peace reside within our hearts, and to strive earnestly for the happiness of ourselves and others. It is also to summon the courage to challenge difficulties by learning from the example of the Daishonin who triumphed over enormous trials and obstacles. This is the key to practical Buddhist study -- study that we can apply to our daily lives. Let us always bear this deeply in mind."

"Attaining Buddhahood in one's present form is not about acquiring some kind of special, super human qualities, but rather it means achieving as ordinary human beings an eternal and boundless state of life characterised by the virtues of eternity, happiness, true self, and purity.
"The benefits and blessings of the Mystic Law are immeasurable. All life --no matter in which of the Ten Worlds it may reside -- is originally an entity of the Mystic Law. Therefore, even if at present we are in a state of Hell, by changing our mind-set or focus at that moment, we can immediately manifest our pure and highest state of life as entities of the Mystic Law. This is what it means to attain Buddhahood in one's present form."
