"In my youth, as a student of 'Toda University,' I studied the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, in Japanese novelist Eiji Yoshikawa's retelling of the classic Chinese tale. Zhuge Liang (Chuko K'ung-ming, 181-234), one of its leading characters, left an indelible impression on my mind. On friendship, he once said; 'It is difficult to sustain associations motivated by ambition for power or profit. When men of true integrity get to know and understand each other, their friendship endures without fading throughout the four seasons, neither blooming extravagantly in the warmth nor dropping its leaves in the cold.... It becomes stronger with each passing period of fortune or adversity.' Let's strive to forge these kind of lasting friendships.
"Second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda stressed to me the importance of extending a hand of friendship to people when they experience hard or challenging times, and of warmly supporting and encouraging them, standing by them with unchanging sincerity and goodwill. Please remember that this is the Soka spirit of friendship."

"I’d like to share with you some more words of Mr. Toda. During the war, many top Gakkai leaders quaked at the thought of persecution by the militarist authorities. For all their brave speeches, they were utterly terrified. Mr. Toda described this clearly in his novel The Human Revolution (under the pen name Myo Goku): 'They make bold pronouncements, but at a crucial moment, what happens?... I've seen it all too well. When the authorities appear, they shrivel up like slugs that have been sprinkled with salt.' Please strive your hardest, so that no one can ever say that of you. I'm counting on you.
"One's actions at a crucial moment are what matter. That's when a person's true worth is revealed. Don't be faint hearted. The stronger the opposition, the more powerfully, boldly, cheerfully we should speak out. This is the Gakkai spirit, it is the spirit that lives in the hearts of Soka mentors and disciples."

"When a fellow member, be they junior or senior, receives an award or honour, our life-state is clearly evident in whether or not we are able to sincerely rejoice as if we ourselves were the ones receiving the accolade. Those who share in such joys are genuine comrades who possess a broad, elevated life-state and are able to practise faith in a spirit of unity with their fellow members. On the other hand, those who instead feel envy or jealousy on such occasions are exhibiting a low, narrow life-state controlled by desires for personal acclaim. "In his letter "The Strategy of the Lotus Sutra", the Daishonin lists three reasons why Kingo triumphed in his recent skirmish. The first is 'usual prudence.' In other words, staying alert, taking careful precautions, paying close attention to what's happening, and never slackening for a moment in any of those efforts. The second is 'courage.' Namely, the courage to deal calmly with any crisis, along with the wisdom that derives from such courage. And third is 'firm faith in the Lotus Sutra.' That is to say, the strong resolve to maintain steadfast faith in the Mystic Law, no matter what happens. This is the foundation for everything else. Because, ultimately, prudence and courage derive from faith.
"Of course, it is a mistake to think that everything will somehow work out okay just because we're practising the Daishonin's Buddhism. "Buddhism is win or lose. It is a struggle between enlightenment and ignorance. Kosen-rufu is a battle between the Buddha and devilish functions. --- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ---
The progress and development of kosen-rufu is determined by how well our discussion meeting goes. Let's try to have the type of meeting where everyone feels inspired by our bright and cheerful conversations that are full of the confidence and conviction we have in our practise. It is from these wonderfully harmonious gatherings that victory and success springs forth.

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Persevering in faith in the evil age of the Latter Day of the Law is like swimming upstream against a powerful current. It is hard enough just to resist the insidious forces exerted by our own earthly desires and fundamental darkness. Shakyamuni compared these forces to a strong current or flood. The Daishonin explains that this is even more true in the LatterDay, when even seemingly remarkable human wisdom, ingenuity, or know-how can be inundated by an inexorable tide of deluded impulses fuelled by the three poisons of greed, anger, and foolishness--an ever-growing tide that wreaks havoc as a force of evil (WND-1, 1121).
"Precisely because it is so difficult to carry out faith in the Mystic Law in such an age, the bonds of mentor and disciple in Buddhism take on a decisive importance. Likewise, a harmonious community of fellow practitioners solidly united in purpose -- in what the Daishonin terms as 'the spirit of many in body, one in mind' -- is also indispensable. The Soka Gakkai possesses the bonds of mentor and disciple that are strong enough to withstand any adversity. And its members -- noble ordinary people who are polishing their lives by striving in faith with the same commitment as their mentor -- are allied together in solid unity. Moreover, countless members, like magnificent dragons born through the triumphant ascent of the waterfall, are leading lives of profound dignity and confidence forged through continually challenging themselves in their faith and self-development."

"Why, then, should there be no cause for regret in laying down one's life for the Lotus Sutra? Regarding this, the Daishonin says: 'Think of this offering as a drop of dew rejoining the ocean, or a speck of dust returning to the earth' (WND-1, 1003). From the standpoint of eternity, our present existence is as fleeting as dew. And, compared to the colossal scale of the universe, our lives are as tiny as specks of dust. However, by solidly basing our lives on the Mystic Law --which is as vast as the ocean and as firm as the earth -- we can establish an unshakable and boundless state of life that is at one with that all - encompassing Law. This is the Daishonin's message."

"The only way to repel this fierce attack of the devil king is to base one's life on 'a great vow' (WND-1, 1003). We cannot bring forth the strength to withstand great hardships or persecution for the sake of the Lotus Sutra unless we make our ultimate goal the attainment of Buddhahood in this lifetime and dedicate our lives to the great vow of the Buddha for the realisation of kosen-rufu. Therefore, the Daishonin calls out from the depths of his being : 'My wish is that all my disciples make a great vow'(WND-1, 1003). A life based on a great vow is truly profound and unshakable."

"The Tang dynasty poet Bai Juyi wrote a well-known poem related to the Dragon Gate. It tells the story of a carp that attempted to climb the waterfall but fell back and, having cut its forehead on the rocks below, decided to abandon the endeavour. Bai Juyi asks what the carp must be feeling, and provides an answer to the effect. ' Apparently, if you become a dragon, you have the hard work of ascending into the heavens and making the rain fall. Rather than taking on such hardship, it's probably better to remain a carp and swim about freely.' Having observed the vicissitudes of the political realm, Bai Juyi no doubt held the sentiment that one might be happier where one is now, living just as one pleases, rather than shouldering onerous responsibilities that often come with success.
"Dragons have the job of making the rain fall -- this same work can be regarded as a burden or as a mission, depending on how one looks at it. This difference in outlook or attitude is also what determines whether we will be defeated by negative influences, or evil friends, or successfully attain Buddhahood. Truly, as the Daishonin says, 'It is the heart that is important' (WND-1, 1000). And this difference in heart or spirit comes down to whether or not we embrace the 'great vow' that is mentioned in this letter.
"To bring our practise of the Lotus Sutra, or the Mystic Law, to successful completion means that we must eagerly and joyfully embrace the mission of taking on the sufferings of still more and more people and of challenging even greater difficulties in our cause for human peace and happiness. The Daishonin urges us to actively seek this way of life, to valiantly climb the Dragon Gate of faith as successors of kosen-rufu, and attain Buddhahood without fail. As practitioners of the Mystic Law, this is what it means for us to 'live based on a great vow.'"

"The 'great vow' of Buddhism can only be actualised through the persistent challenge of going out into society and earnestly seeking to do whatever we can to inspire and encourage each person we encounter, leaving no stone unturned, so to speak. That is why both Mr. Makiguchi and Mr. Toda placed such great importance on one-on-one dialogue and discussion meetings. "'Those who believe in the Lotus Sutra are as if in winter,' the Daishonin says. Before we can welcome spring, we must go through winter. Attaining Buddhahood in this lifetime entails a fierce struggle to change our karma, as well as to overcome the various challenges posed to our practice by the three obstacles and four devils, and the three powerful enemies. The trials of winter are unavoidable if we wish to soar into a brilliant springtime based on faith.
"'Those who believe in the Lotus Sutra are as if in winter'-- these are the compassionate words of a strict father advising us to follow the sure path to attaining Buddhahood by battling and triumphing over all karmic impediments. The way we attain Buddhahood is summed up in the words, 'Winter always turns to spring.'
"Winter turns into spring; it does not become autumn. This is an unchanging principle of nature. In the same way, the Daishonin says, those who uphold the Mystic Law, the great teaching for gaining enlightenment, will never fail to become Buddhas or remain in the deluded state of an ordinary, unenlightened person. As the Buddha promises in the Lotus Sutra, those who hear and embrace the Mystic Law will all attain Buddhahood without a single exception (cf. LS2, 41). This is a universal principle of life."

"People who seek truth and self-improvement always search for mentors. And those who have a mentor in their hearts have personalities that exude inner strength and dignity. As the ancient Roman philosopher Seneca wrote: 'If I do not owe to such a man all the love that I give to those to whom I am bound by the most grateful ties, I am indeed ungrateful.'"

Chinese premier Zhou Enlai (1898-1976) said: 'We must be united. Lack of unity is the first sign of disintegration. As such, we must make a positive effort to unite together.' This is very true. Disrupting the unity of the harmonious community of believers is a manifestation of the workings of devilish functions, and is a grave offence in Buddhism.

"Above all, both you and your husband are upholders of the Lotus Sutra. You will surely bear a jewel of a child who is going to inherit the seed for the propagation of the Lotus Sutra. I wholeheartedly congratulate you. The child is the one who will inherit both your physical and spiritual aspects."

"The American engineer Frederick Winslow Taylor (1856-1915), who is sometimes called 'the father of scientific management,' once said: 'By integrity... I mean that straight forward honesty of purpose which makes a man truthful, not only to others but with himself, which makes a man high-minded, gives him high aspirations and high ideals.' He also remarked: 'What we are in the world for is to learn continually to do better.' Fulfilment and victory in life are achieved by having a great goal and realising personal growth and development as we advance towards that objective."

"When one comes to realise and see that each thing -- the cherry, the plum, the peach, the damson -- in its own entity, without undergoing any change, possesses the eternally endowed three bodies, then this is what is meant by the word ryo, 'to include' or all-inclusive."

"As Nichiren Daishonin points out: 'If one in body but different in mind, they can achieve nothing remarkable' (WND-1, 618). Without unity, the path to achieving kosen-rufu would be closed off. If that were to happen, the biggest problem would be that the path to everyone's happiness would also become blocked. This must be avoided at all costs.
"The Daishonin also declares: 'Although Nichiren and his followers are few, because they are different in body, but united in mind, they will definitely accomplish their great mission of widely propagating the Lotus Sutra' (WND-1, 618). Even under adverse circumstances, so long as everyone is united based on faith, they will be able to open the way and advance kosen-rufu. Unity is power."

"...there is no need for us to ever despair over any situation or to be envious of others. No matter what challenging day-to-day problems or what karmic suffering we may face in the course of life, just as the white lotus blooms with lofty, fragrant beauty while growing in muddy water, we will be definitely able to bring forth magnificent flowers of unparalleled happiness. This is the Buddhist principle of our lives remaining pure in this defiled world, just like the lotus."

"The Buddhist concept of 'the oneness of good and evil' is illuminating. Buddhism teaches that both aspects are inherent within human life, with one or the other being manifested due to the arising of certain causes and conditions. Based on this concept, I believe that the true value of creative, constructive dialogue is to be found in our effort to perfect and elevate our own lives, to suppress the manifestation of evil or negative aspects, and to foster and encourage the manifestation of good or positive aspects. This very effort underlies the kind of dialogue and communication that we are in such dire need of today. "

"In November of 2006, I met with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) director general and Nobel Peace laureate Dr. Mohamed El Baradei. I would like to share with you a remark he made at that time that left a deep impression on me: 'We continue to emphasise our differences instead of what we have in common. We continue to talk about "us" versus "them."' The attitude of which he speaks is not productive, to say the least. We need to abandon this confrontational approach and seek out what we share in commonas human beings by discovering ways to use our differences and diversity to learn from each other and enrich ourselves. I believe that this is the most urgent issue our world now faces, and one that we must treat with the greatest seriousness."
