Our effort to 'establish the correct teaching for the peace of the land' is a spiritual struggle to transform this bleak situation.

"Everything starts with dialogue; it is the first step towards fresh value-creation.
"The 'Expedient Means' (2nd) chapter of the Lotus Sutra-- part of which were cite morning and evening in gongyo-- is a paean to life that begins with the Buddha embarking on a dialogue with his disciples: 'At that time the World-Honoured One calmly arose from his samadhi and addressed Shariputra'(LS2, 23). The Lotus Sutra describes an assembly that takes place on the ultimate level of life and embraces the entire universe, starting on Eagle Peak and moving to the Ceremony in the Air expounded in the 'Life Span'(16th) chapter [a portion of which we also recite in gongyo]. When we sit infront of the Gohonzon, we ourselves become part of that assembly. Gongyo is a ceremony of dialogue between teacher and disciples, between the Buddha of the Latter Day of the Law and us. It is a ceremony watched over by all Buddhas and heavenly deities of the ten directions and three existences.
"In a letter to the lay nun Myoho, the Daishonin writes:
"When with our mouths we chant the Mystic Law [Nam-myoho-renge-kyo], our Buddha nature, being summoned, will invariably emerge. The Buddha nature of [the heavenly deities] Brahma and Shakra, being called, will protect us, and the Buddha nature of the Buddhas and bodhisattvas [throughout the universe], being summoned, will rejoice. "Speaking in an easily comprehensible way that reaches people and touches their hearts--this is a vital point for a successful dialogue and an important quality for leaders to have.
"Also, when you're standing in front of a large crowd, you don't need to shout at them or speak in an exaggeratedly forceful manner. Look at your audience with genuine warmth and smile at them when you speak. Your spirit should be to inspire everyone to join in and work harmoniously alongside you. When you shout or speak too forcefully, you may think you're demonstrating your impassioned commitment, but all your audience sees is a frightening grimace!
"The great Japanese educator and reformer Yoshida Shoin (1830-59) instructed his students on how they should address others: 'In your everyday conversations with people, speak in a tone closer to that of a gentle, refined woman. That way, at a crucial moment, you can make your voice ring out with powerful vigour.' He urged them to smile at people warmly. Given the stern visage with which Yoshida Shoin is often depicted in portraits, many of you must be astonished that he would say such a thing! But truly accomplished leaders put people at ease and impress them with their warmth, gentleness, and consideration. "Everything begins with changing our own attitude or mind-set. This applies equally to forging solid unity. If members of an organisation are constantly at loggerheads, always blaming and criticising each other, there will never be any unity among them. Since organisations are made up of individuals, weare bound to encounter all kinds of people. At times, there may be cases when our personalities just don't mesh with certain individuals. That is why unless we do our human revolution, we will not be able to forge bonds of shared purpose with each other, rising above various differences. In 'The Heritage of the Ultimate Law of Life,' the Daishonin urges his followers to unite 'in the spirit of many in body but one in mind, transcending all differences among themselves [free of distinctions of self and other] to become as inseparable as fish and the water in which they swim' (WND-1,217).
"It is only natural that people will have different personalities and temperaments. But that doesn't mean that because people are different from us, we should discriminate against them or exclude and reject them. The important thing is that we respect each other and accept each others' differences, with an all-embracing heart that is free of discrimination or distinctions of self and other."

"The Japanese painter Shoen Uemura (1875-1949). One of the few female painters of that period, Uemura is famous for her refined and elegant paintings wrote:
"'I cannot remember all the times that in tears I gritted my teeth and repressed my anger [at the most outrageous discriminatory treatment in the male-dominated world of art], all the while vowing that I would someday make them sit up and pay attention.' ***"'Just as the ship of life may be buffeted by wind and rain and sometimes list almost to the point of sinking, I, too, have experienced various bitter trials and hardships.'***"'Many times I suffered so terribly that I seriously thought that I'd be better off dead. But when you repeatedly undergo experiences of this kind,you become incredibly strong.'
"Real happiness is not the absence of any problems, difficulties, or suffering. As Nichiren Daishonin writes, difficulties are to be regarded as peace and comfort (cf. OTT, 115). Whenever you find yourself beset by some new harsh trial, adopt a positive attitude and face it bravely as an opportunity to strengthen yourself. This is the Soka Gakkai spirit. If the meetings are filled with people who are tired and listless, thinking 'Not another meeting,' 'Not another activity,' even their applause will sound weary. [Laughter.] Meetings in the early days of our movement were incredibly lively, and the applause, too, was always enthusiastic and powerful. Such meetings are energizing, and that's good for our health, too.

"The Buddha became enlightened to the fundamental power that connects all things in the universe -- namely, the Mystic Law. He also awakened to the fact that all people have the potential to manifest the power of this Law in their own lives. This potential is what in Buddhism is termed as the Buddha nature or Dharma nature. Only when each of us brings forth the wisdom of our enlightened Buddha nature can we truly actualise the unity of diverse individuals as taught in Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism. Because we each rise above our attachment to self and reveal our highest potential and individuality, the path of 'many in body, one in mind' becomes a path for absolute victory.
"We must also remember that, through manifesting the wisdom of our Buddha nature, we can break free of the darkness or ignorance that would keep us trapped in the paths of evil and suffering. The spirit of many in body but one in mind doesn't refer to the kind of unity that is achieved through external constraints or demands for conformity, but to a unity that is a manifestation of the wisdom of our Buddha nature resulting from a fundamental liberation in the inner most depths of our lives. We can interpret this to refer to recommending the Mystic Law to others and inspiring them to take faith in it. The Lotus Sutra thus concludes with encouragement.

The Latter Day is a time when people's lives are shrouded in darkness or ignorance, and destructive influences prevail. People are drawn into a downward spiral of negative causes and misery. Therefore, if we hope to guide people to happiness in the Latter Day of the Law, it is of utmost importance to teach them about the power they possess within to triumph over suffering. This is the teaching of the Daishonin's Buddhism.

The doctrine of changing karma taught in Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism is an unrivaled principle of victory in life, bringing hope, courage, and confidence to all people. It embodies a philosophy of supreme humanism showing that each individual inherently possesses the power to weather any destiny. It also constitutes a tenet of unsurpassed respect for the sanctity of life, revealing the fundamental causality of life by which we can actually tap and manifest this power. Marie wrote: "The life of a great scientist in his laboratory is not, as many think, a peaceful idyll. More often it is a bitter battle with things, with one's surroundings, and above all with oneself." This is the heartfelt cry of a person who has ceaselessly struggled. She further noted: "Between the days of fecund productivity are inserted days of uncertainty when nothing seems to succeed, and when even matter itself seems hostile; and it is then that one must hold out against discouragement." Her words hold true not only for scientific research but all areas of life.
There were times when the Curies felt despondent because nothing seemed to be going right in their efforts to isolate pure radium. After all, they were dealing with a chemical process when their actual field of specialty was physics. Even Pierre, with his deep-seated commitment, reached a point where he was worn out by the fruitless struggle and ready to give up. It would be very difficultto overcome the obstacles, he decided, and perhaps they should wait until they could work under better conditions before making another attempt. Out of concern for his wife on whom the exhausting work was taking a heavy toll, Pierre advised that they take a break from their undertaking, at least temporarily.
However, Marie refused to give up. She didn't know the meaning of the term. She was confident that radium existed, and she was determined to undergo any hardship to isolate it. When faced with a challenge, a woman with a strong will is unbeatable. Marie was also of the belief that with a bit of creativity one could work happily anywhere, no matter how challenging one's environment.

We who practice this unsurpassed Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin are the bodhisattvas of whom the Lotus Sutra speaks, the most noble and admirable "treasures of the nation" and "treasures of the world." Innumerable heavenly deities and Buddhas-- the positive and protective functions of the universe-- will unfailingly support and protect us. Please be absolutely assured of this. Let's proceed on the great path of genuine happiness with courage and optimism, viewing the world from a lofty and elevated state of life.

The Great Teacher Dengyo (also known as Saicho; 767-822), who propagated the Lotus Sutra in Japan some 1,200 years ago, during the Middle Day of the Law, wrote: "Who, if not the bodhisattvas, are the treasures of the nation and the benefactors of the nation?" He proclaims that bodhisattvas, as depicted in the Lotus Sutra, are the genuine treasures and benefactors of a country.
And who today, in the Latter Day of the Law, chants and propagates the daimoku of the Mystic Law in accord with the Daishonin's teachings and carries out the work of Bodhisattvas of the Earth for the sake of others, for society, for the nation, and the cause of world peace? None other, I declare, than all of us, the members of the SGI. This is something of which we have good reason to be proud.

Allow me now to share an episode from the Chinese historical text Records of the Grand Historian by Sima Qian (Ssu-ma Ch'ien; c. 145-86 B.C.E.). Centuries ago in ancient China, King Hui of Wei said to King Wei of Qi: "My realm is small, but I possess ten jewels that, while only an inch in size, can each fully illuminate a dozen chariots. How is it that a realm as powerful as yours has no such treasure?"
King Wei of Qi replied calmly: "What I regard as a treasure is quite different from what you call a treasure."
What, then, was the treasure of King Wei of Qi? He replied that he had four exceptionally talented ministers, each of whom governed their assigned territory wisely and expertly. The light of these four talented ministers, said the king, surely illuminated a distance of more than a thousand miles.
In other words, no amount of jewels or material wealth constitutes a nation's true treasure. It is not material things, but rather talented and able individuals who are the true treasures of a nation. This was the belief of the King Wei of Qi --a belief applauded and endorsed by the historian who recorded this incident, Sima Qian.

Using the example of cherry, peach, plum, and damson blossoms, the Daishonin teaches that each unique entity, just as it is, possesses Buddhahood (cf. OTT, 200). The essence of Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism is for each individual to reveal from within their own true and highest potential. There's no need to pretend, to try to be someone you're not, to be impatient and anxious, or to doubt yourself. The Soka path of mentor and disciple is a great path of victory and happiness that will enable you to shine your brightest and in your own unique way.
The important thing is uniting with your fellow members and moving ahead together with hope and confidence, respecting and encouraging each other and not being swayed by passing problems or events.

But in the realm of faith itself, faith is ultimately what counts. In our organisation, those to whom we should offer the greatest respect are the members who actively share the Daishonin's Buddhism with others.
