"The Daishonin writes: 'It is the power of the Buddhist Law that enables the deities of the sun and moon to make their rounds of the four continents'(WND-1, 685). Later, in the 'Emergence of the Treasure Tower' (11th) chapter, Shakyamuni declares that all Buddhas will praise those who uphold and propagate the Lotus Sutra with 'valour' and 'diligence' amid great hardships in future ages after his passing (cf. "An important reason why fighting against evil in Buddhism is a part of our Buddhist practise is that if we fail to do so, we become accomplices to evil. In relation to this frightening reality, the Daishonin cites the Great Teacher Nan-yüeh, who says that those who turn a blind eye to evil will fall into hell along with those people who actually commit that evil (WND-1,747). 'Failing to do good is the same as doing evil'-- this is the undying credo of Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, the founding president of the Soka Gakkai.
"Evil friends function to intensify others' ignorance or darkness-- that is, heighten the workings of the three poisons of greed, anger, and foolishness in their lives. That is the fearful nature of such negative influences. Allowing evil to go unchallenged, therefore, ultimately spells suffering and pain for many people. As long as Buddhism is a philosophy that teaches the inherent dignity of human life, it is crucial that its practitioners fight resolutely against those tendencies that promote disrespect for human life, discrimination, and the destruction of life."

"With the Gohonzon that embodies the life of Nichiren Daishonin as our'reality' and faith in Nam-myoho-renge-kyo based on the Gohonzon as our 'wisdom' (in accordance with the principle of 'substituting faith for wisdom'), we can achieve the same state of fusion of reality and wisdom (or enlightenment) as the Buddha. All that we require is the strong faith to withstand and repel obstacles and devilish functions that are a manifestation of darkness or ignorance. All that we require is persistent faith that never wavers under any circumstances.
"Mr. Toda said: 'The Gohonzon [Nam-myoho-renge-kyo] is the fundamentalentity of life that powers change in the universe. Without a human revolution that triumphs over the negative forces that are inherent within the human heart, a country or an organisation -- no matter how strong and flourishing it may be for a time -- will reach an impasse. There is no such thing as a life that is free of hardships. We experience adversity precisely so that we can achieve true peace in life. But unless we are aware of our inner strength to withstand hardships, we will find ourselves in a situation where one difficulty gives rise to another, and we will ultimately be crushed by their weight. The Latter Day is a time when people's lives are shrouded in darkness or ignorance, and destructive influences prevail. People are drawn into a downward spiral of negative causes and misery. Therefore, if we hope to guide people to happiness in the Latter Day of the Law, it is of utmost importance to teach them about the power they possess within to triumph over suffering. This is the teaching of the Daishonin's Buddhism.

A bodhisattva firmly believes that there is no hardship or suffering that cannot be surmounted.
The doctrine of changing karma taught in Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism is an unrivaled principle of victory in life, bringing hope, courage, and confidence to all people. It embodies a philosophy of supreme humanism showing that each individual inherently possesses the power to weather any destiny. It also constitutes a tenet of unsurpassed respect for the sanctity of life, revealing the fundamental causality of life by which we can actually tap and manifest this power. She further noted: "Between the days of fecund productivity are inserted days of uncertainty when nothing seems to succeed, and when even matter itself seems hostile; and it is then that one must hold out against discouragement." Her words hold true not only for scientific research but all areas of life.
There were times when the Curies felt despondent because nothing seemed to be going right in their efforts to isolate pure radium. After all, they were dealing with a chemical process when their actual field of specialty was physics. Even Pierre, with his deep-seated commitment, reached a point where he was worn out by the fruitless struggle and ready to give up. It would be very difficultto overcome the obstacles, he decided, and perhaps they should wait until they could work under better conditions before making another attempt. Out of concern for his wife on whom the exhausting work was taking a heavy toll, Pierre advised that they take a break from their undertaking, at least temporarily.
However, Marie refused to give up. She didn't know the meaning of the term. She was confident that radium existed, and she was determined to undergo any hardship to isolate it. Allow me now to share an episode from the Chinese historical text Records of the Grand Historian by Sima Qian (Ssu-ma Ch'ien; c. 145-86 B.C.E.). Centuries ago in ancient China, King Hui of Wei said to King Wei of Qi: "My realm is small, but I possess ten jewels that, while only an inch in size, can each fully illuminate a dozen chariots. How is it that a realm as powerful as yours has no such treasure?"
King Wei of Qi replied calmly: "What I regard as a treasure is quite different from what you call a treasure."
What, then, was the treasure of King Wei of Qi? He replied that he had four exceptionally talented ministers, each of whom governed their assigned territory wisely and expertly. The light of these four talented ministers, said the king, surely illuminated a distance of more than a thousand miles.
In other words, no amount of jewels or material wealth constitutes a nation's true treasure. It is not material things, but rather talented and able individuals who are the true treasures of a nation. This was the belief of the King Wei of Qi --a belief applauded and endorsed by the historian who recorded this incident, Sima Qian.

Of course, we all know that society places importance on academic background and titles, and the presence of highly educated, widely recognised people within our organisation can help promote deeper trust among the general public. But in the realm of faith itself, faith is ultimately what counts. In our organisation, those to whom we should offer the greatest respect are the members who actively share the Daishonin's Buddhism with others.
"For example, a person doing judo can read a lot of books that have nothing to do with judo and brag about being well educated and smart, but that has no bearing on their practise of judo. To judo athletes, winning at judo is what counts. Simply put, the same principle holds true for our Buddhist practise."

Earnestly chant daimoku and just keep pressing ahead with courage, undaunted by what others may say, always proud to be a Soka Gakkai member. Mr. Toda declared with unshakable self-assurance: "I am Josei Toda! I am a Soka Gakkai member! I don't care what anyone says, I'm proud of who I am!" This was his most deep-seated conviction. The aim of the Soka Gakkai is something more powerful and profound than secular power; it is the spreading of the principles of Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism, which is the key to building happiness and peace for all humankind. Buddhism expounds the Law of life, which is of a completely different dimension than the laws of the land and secular authority.
I learned the principles of the Daishonin's Buddhism from Mr. Toda. He personally instructed me, for instance, in the difficult Gosho, "The Entity of the Mystic Law"(WND-1, 417ff). He taught and trained me a little every morning, and on Sundays as well. Sometimes he'd ask questions, and I'd have to answer. When we completed our study of this writing, Mr. Toda gave me a certificate indicating that I had completed this course of instruction under him. This certificate was just a simple piece of paper, but I regarded it as one of my most precious treasures. I believed that it would become a symbol of the highest intellectual excellence, and I'm sure Mr. Toda had the same conviction. The Buddhist Law is truly wondrous in its workings, and now I have been privileged to receive numerous academic honors from around the globe. In contrast, those who have scorned certificates or awards bestowed on them in the realm of kosen-rufu have all ended up miserable. As the Daishonin writes: "It is the heart that is important" (WND-1, 1000).

The German poet Heinrich Heine (1797 1856) wrote: "One is noble / If one nobly feels and acts." Neither social status nor wealth is any measure of a person's true worth; nor should we ever judge people by such criteria. For example, does being a government figure make a person special? Not at all. Government leaders are human beings just like the rest of us, and in a democracy, inparticular, the people are sovereign. Government figures exist to serve the people. It is a person's actions that count.

"True disciples are willing to take on hardship or persecution in their mentor's stead. For instance, when Mr. Toda accompanied Mr. Makiguchi to prison, he prayed:"I am still young, but Mr. Makiguchi is old. May my mentor be released from prison as soon as possible. It doesn't matter how long I stay here, but let my mentor go free right away!" This was his deep and fervent prayer day and night. "
"The essence of Buddhism is found in the spirit of striving with the same commitment as the mentor. If this rigorous spirit is lost, the very foundation of Buddhism will be destroyed. Therefore, those who genuinely seek to carry on the correct teaching of Buddhism must always remember to maintain this spirit and take action based on it. "

"The Daishonin referred to disciples of steadfast faith as sages and worthies. He treated them as his equals, bestowing, I believe, the most honourable titles on them because of their nobility as human beings. The Daishonin didn't praise people because they were learned or had an exalted position in society. A person's level of learning has nothing to do with their faith, and we must never discriminate against anyone on that basis. It is evident from his writings that this was not the Daishonin's spirit. As the Buddha of the Latter Day of the Law, he bestowed the title of 'Sage' on an ordinary woman (cf. WND-1, 325). This is a crucial point to remember. If this point is lost sight of, the Gakkai will descend into ruin.

"The Russian author Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) said: 'Those who live life in perfection look only forwards, those who have stopped moving forwards look back on their achievements.' Moving forwards-- this is what all of you are doing. Those who keep pressing ahead for their own growth, for the happiness of their friends, and for the development of kosen-rufu are the most praise worthy; they are the ultimate victors in life. If, on the other hand, we become arrogant and self-satisfied, thinking that we've already done enough and can just sit back and relax, we begin to stop growing. Not advancing is regressing.

"Though public opinion may seem a matter of great importance, it is something created by human beings. The Mystic Law, on the other hand, is the principle that governs the entire universe. It is of a totally different scale. When we understand this, we can attain the state of a Buddha. This is hard to fully grasp, however, which is why faith is crucial. It all comes down to having faith. The Daishonin cites the words [of T'ien-t'ai]: "Belief means to be without doubt" (OTT, 54). When we chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo without doubt in the Gohonzon and make steadfast efforts for kosen-rufu, we can realise eternal happiness in our lives.

"Guo wrote: 'Nothing moves the human heart like song.' Song has always played an important role in the Soka Gakkai's development and growth. Guo's words are very perceptive. Songs inspire and energise us. Mr. Toda was also well aware of this. In Japan, our advance has always begun with the singing of Gakkai songs. This is a wonderful path. Let's continue singing songs together.
"Guo also wrote: 'Song instantly unites people's hearts and minds, and spurs them to action.' Song has a wondrous power. People who make light of that and refuse to join in singing will not share the same energy and joy. "In my youth, as a student of 'Toda University,' I studied the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, in Japanese novelist Eiji Yoshikawa's retelling of the classic Chinese tale. Zhuge Liang (Chuko K'ung-ming, 181-234), one of its leading characters, left an indelible impression on my mind. On friendship, he once said; 'It is difficult to sustain associations motivated by ambition for power or profit. When men of true integrity get to know and understand each other, their friendship endures without fading throughout the four seasons, neither blooming extravagantly in the warmth nor dropping its leaves in the cold.... It becomes stronger with each passing period of fortune or adversity.' Let's strive to forge these kind of lasting friendships.
"Second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda stressed to me the importance of extending a hand of friendship to people when they experience hard or challenging times, and of warmly supporting and encouraging them, standing by them with unchanging sincerity and goodwill. When the authorities appear, they shrivel up like slugs that have been sprinkled with salt.' Please strive your hardest, so that no one can ever say that of you. I'm counting on you.
